Which countries have square flags?

Only two national flags are square: Switzerland and Vatican City. Both use a 1:1 ratio. Every other national flag is rectangular except Nepal, whose flag is shaped like two stacked triangles. Belgium comes close to square, with a ratio of 13:15.

The Swiss flag is a white cross on a red square, set out in Swiss law. Swiss ships use a different version, a rectangular 2:3 ensign, so the square flag is the one you see on land. The Vatican flag is a vertical bicolour of yellow and white, and its 1:1 ratio was written into the city state's 2023 Fundamental Law.

Square flags give a centered symbol equal room on every side, which suits a cross or a single emblem. To try one, choose the 1:1 preset in the flag maker. The flag ratios guide covers other proportions, and what is the standard flag ratio gives the short answer.
