What do the colors on a flag mean?

It depends on the flag. Some countries state an official meaning for their colors, and many do not. A common pattern is a color tied to a group, a history or a landscape. There is no universal code, so a color only means what its flag's makers say it means.

Ireland is one country with a stated meaning. Its government describes the green, white and orange tricolour as a symbol of unity between people of different traditions on the island. When Thomas Francis Meagher presented it in 1848, he said the white in the center signified a lasting truce between Orange and Green.

Many popular color meanings are later interpretations, not official ones. For your own design, decide what each color stands for and write it down. The flag colors meaning guide has sourced country examples. Then try your palette in the flag maker.
