Fimbriation

Fimbriation is a narrow band or line of contrasting color that separates two areas of a flag, such as a cross from its field. It is often white or gold. The white and gold lines on the flag of South Africa are fimbriation.

The idea comes from heraldry, which avoids placing two dark colors or two light colors side by side. A thin white line between red and blue keeps both visible from a distance. The Union Jack uses white fimbriation around its red crosses, and the flags of Gambia and Namibia separate their stripes the same way.

To add fimbriation in the flag maker, place a slightly wider white stripe or cross from the Shapes tab, then put the colored one on top. The parts of a flag guide shows how it fits with the field and charge, and what the parts of a flag are called gives a quick summary.
