Canton

A canton is a rectangular area in the upper corner of a flag nearest the pole. Strictly the word can mean any quarter of a flag, but in practice it almost always means the upper hoist corner. The stars on the US flag sit in its canton.

Australia and New Zealand both carry the Union Jack in the canton, which ties their flags to Britain. That is a common use of the canton: one flag placed inside another to show a link, which matches NAVA's advice to be distinctive or be related.

In the flag maker, the canton layout gives you a field with a separate block in the corner. Click each part to recolor it, then drop a star or another symbol into the canton. It is one of the layout families in the flag design ideas guide, and the parts of a flag guide shows where it sits next to the hoist.
